UnxEdge vs Finviz: When a General Screener Isn't Built for Breakout Traders
Finviz is one of the most popular stock screeners ever built. Here's where it stops and where UnxEdge picks up.
Finviz has been the default stock screener for retail traders since 2007. It's fast, free for basic use, and 25 million people use it monthly. If you want to filter 8,000+ stocks by P/E ratio, short interest, RSI, or sector in under a minute, nothing touches it at the price point. It genuinely earns its reputation.
But Finviz is a screener. It shows you what to look at. It doesn't tell you how to trade it, doesn't generate a trade plan, doesn't run autonomous bots against its own signals, and doesn't publish a daily debrief explaining what happened after the close. The free tier has 15-20 minute delayed data and ads. There's no mobile app. And the wedge pattern filter, while present, gives you a list of names with no context about which ones are actually compressing into a high-probability breakout.
UnxEdge is a free alternative to Finviz for breakout traders. It's not trying to replace every feature Finviz has. It focuses entirely on wedge pattern setups on the 30-minute timeframe, grades each one from B to A++, and delivers a complete trade plan with entry, stop, and three price targets. The free tier is live now. Pro is $29/month. Here's what you get with each tool and where they diverge.
Both have free tiers. The paid upgrades are very different.
Finviz's free tier is legitimately useful. You get the full screener with 60+ filters, sector heat maps, chart snapshots, and news with no signup required. The catch is 15-20 minute delayed data and ads throughout the interface. For pre-market research on a slow connection, the free tier works fine. For intraday decisions where timing matters, you need Elite at $39.50/month ($24.96/month annually).
UnxEdge's free tier gives you live top scanner setups, full Edge Lab access showing every bot trade in the track record, and the complete daily debrief archive. Pro at $29/month unlocks all 200+ setups with live prices, complete trade plans per setup, options contract suggestions, and Arxe intelligence including the morning brief and daily swing pick.
Finviz Elite is $10.50/month more than UnxEdge Pro for a tool that does broader screening but stops before generating a trade plan. For options-focused breakout traders, that extra cost buys features that mostly don't apply to how they trade.

The breadth argument is real
Finviz's screener covers more ground than any other free tool available. Over 60 filters spanning price, volume, float, short interest, gap, RSI, moving averages, candlestick patterns, analyst ratings, insider ownership, and more, all loading in under a second. For traders who want to cast a wide net across the full market before narrowing to a watchlist, nothing comes close at the price point.
The sector heat maps are genuinely excellent. You can see at a glance which sectors are leading, which are lagging, and where relative strength is rotating. This kind of macro-to-micro workflow, going from sector overview to individual stock screen, is exactly what Finviz does better than anyone. If that's the first step in your trading day, it earns its place.
Finviz also covers fundamental data that UnxEdge doesn't touch at all: P/E ratios, earnings dates, float, short interest, insider trades, analyst upgrades. For traders who mix fundamental and technical filters in their screens, Finviz is the better starting point. It's also been around since 2007 and has 25 million monthly users for good reason. The refinement shows.
The honest limitation: Finviz stops at the screener output. You get a list of tickers that match your filters. What to do with them, when to enter, what to risk, what options contract to buy: none of that comes from the platform. That's a separate research step the trader has to complete manually.
From screener output to trade plan
Most traders who use Finviz for wedge patterns run the candlestick pattern filter, get a list of names, then open each chart manually to check if the setup is actually worth trading. That process takes time and still doesn't tell you where to enter, where to stop out, or what options contract matches the setup.
The UnxEdge scanner closes that gap. Every wedge setup comes pre-graded across six dimensions: bias score, pattern quality, confirmation count, wedge geometry, volume dry-up, and pressure score. A-grade setups and above get a full trade plan automatically: entry zone, stop level, TP1 at 1R, TP2 at 2R, TP3 at 3R, and for Pro users, the specific options contract with strike, expiry, and premium range.
The bots run the same signals live. Wex, Xcel, and Xontra trade against the scanner output every market day. Every single trade is logged in the public track record: entry, exit, result, R-multiple. When a setup fails, it's in the log. That accountability is intentional. The daily debrief at 4:30pm ET covers what broke out, what failed, what the bots did, and what to watch tomorrow.
Setups with pressure below 60 and consolidation of 3 to 5 bars have shown 83.7% win rate across 43 backtested trades. That filter is flagged automatically on every qualifying setup in the live scanner. No manual chart review required.
Two tools, two different jobs
You trade wedge pattern breakouts and want setups pre-graded and ready to act on. You trade options and need contract-level output per setup. You want AI bots running the same strategy with a public trade log. You want to know what happened after the close every single day without doing the research yourself. You want real-time data and a trade plan for $29/month with no ads.
You need a broad market screener covering fundamentals and technicals across 8,000+ stocks. You start your day with sector heat maps to identify where the strength is before narrowing to individual names. You mix fundamental filters (float, short interest, earnings) with technical ones in your screening process. You're happy doing your own trade planning once you have a watchlist. You want a tool that's free to start with no time pressure to upgrade.
A lot of traders use both. Finviz for the morning market overview and broad watchlist. UnxEdge for the specific wedge setups within that watchlist, with grading and trade plans ready. They're not really competing for the same job. If you're currently using Finviz's candlestick pattern filter to find wedge setups and then manually reviewing charts, UnxEdge Pro at $29/month does that entire step for you and adds a trade plan on top.
