SPY slips 0.09% as 10 of 99 setups broke out and 42 failed
Market recap, bot performance, and scanner analysis for Wednesday, August 05.
The UnxEdge breakout scanner found 99 wedge pattern setups today, but only 10 actually broke cleanly, which tells you most of this tape was noise wearing a bullish mask. Semis tried to stabilize while gold kept rotating in and housing kept rotating out, and that split mattered more than the flat SPY close.
Index performance looked calm on the surface, but the internals were worse than the headline. QQQ dropped 1.02% while SPY barely moved, which is the kind of divergence that exposes weak participation under the hood. The scanner reflected that immediately: 82 bull setups printed, but 42 failed. That is not broad confirmation. That is a market still handing out false starts.
Macro-wise, today was less about one dominant headline and more about the message from earnings and guidance cuts across the tape. Weak outlooks from names tied to consumer, telecom hardware, and housing-adjacent demand, including Zillow and Inseego, reinforced a selective risk environment rather than a full-risk-on bid. Traders did not reward mediocre forward commentary, and that kept pressure on growth pockets even as isolated names like NVDA still pushed through. With NFP due Friday, this was a market trimming conviction, not adding it. For context on where the clean levels still sit, see live setups in the scanner. Also revisit yesterday's debrief because today followed the same script: plenty of setups, very few that deserved trust.
Market Snapshot
Flat index close, ugly breakout participation
The grade distribution was fine. The follow-through was not. Five A-grade setups in a session with QQQ down over 1% means quality names still existed, but they needed stock-specific strength, not index help.
Yesterday's Pick
JD BULL stopped out
Yesterday's Arxe swing pick was JD BULL (HIGH). Entry zone was $33.19 to $33.33, stop was $33.15, TP1 was $33.38, and the trade never got traction. It stopped out for a -2.64R hit.
That is the cost of forcing continuation in a tape that keeps faking strength intraday. Accountability matters more than narrative here. The setup was there, the outcome was bad, and the market did not pay it.
Arxe Pick of the Day
No swing pick earned it
There was no Arxe swing pick generated today. That is the right call.
ADBE screened well statistically and had the strongest raw edge on paper, but the system did not convert a swing selection. In a market where headline indexes hid weak breadth and 42 setups failed, passing is a position. Traders who need action every day are usually the ones donating P&L.
Keep ADBE on deck because it remains one of the cleaner unresolved A- names. For current grades and levels, see live setups in the scanner.
Highest RVOL Setup
Where the volume was today
XBI BULL, Grade B+, RVOL 4.01x, Pressure 76, Resolution: failed.
This is why raw volume is not enough. XBI attracted the heaviest relative participation on the board, but biotech remains one of the weakest groups versus SPY and continues to lag week over week. High RVOL inside a weak group often means event-driven churn, not sustained institutional accumulation.
Translation: the crowd showed up, but not to sponsor a clean move. They showed up to fight over it.
Bot Performance
Still paused, and that was probably a gift today
Wex and Xcel are in training mode while strategy is being refined. The scanner and Arxe intelligence remain fully active. When trading resumes, every trade will be published here. You can watch Wex and Xcel trade live in the Edge Lab.
Missed Trades
The tape still offered money, just not broadly
A- BULL | +2.97R | TP2 | RVOL 1.0x | Day +2.13%
A- BULL | +2.87R | TP2 | RVOL 0.75x | Day +3.96%
B+ BEAR | +0.17R | Minor | RVOL 0.41x | Day -1.27%
A- BULL | +0.17R | Minor | RVOL 0.48x | Day +3.37%
Total missed opportunity was +5.84R across four breakouts, with two TP2 moves doing most of the work. The real misses were REGN and NVDA. Both ran without needing huge RVOL confirmation, which matters because it suggests price structure and leadership quality beat the volume filter today.
The NIO and PFE misses are not a big deal. Those were marginal moves and exactly the kind of scraps a stricter filter can ignore without regret.
Calibration insight: today argues for loosening RVOL sensitivity on top-tier A- names in leadership groups, while keeping low-conviction B+ noise filtered out.
Breakout Scorecard
Too many failures for anyone to call this a healthy tape
Notable names that did break included BA, HUBS, IBIT, NVDA, and the bear-side moves in NIO and ON.
But the big number is still 42 failures. When failure count runs more than 4-to-1 over successful breaks, the market is telling you entries need to be selective, late, and earned.
A 19.2% breakout rate says the tape is still tradable in spots, but broad breakout aggression is a losing strategy here.
Watch Tomorrow
Specific levels that actually matter
These are the unresolved A/A- names still coiling. Focus on trigger discipline, especially with Friday's NFP already on deck. For live grade changes and any level updates, see live setups in the scanner.
If tomorrow brings another weak QQQ session, only the names with tight compression and high pressure deserve capital. Everything else is a trap candidate.
