SPY gains 1.83% as 19 of 85 setups break out; JD named pick
Market recap, bot performance, and scanner analysis for Tuesday, August 04.
The UnxEdge breakout scanner tracked 85 setups today, and the real tell was quality, not quantity: four A-grade names, 19 breakouts, and a tape that finally rewarded clean wedge pattern participation instead of chopping it to death. In a market ripping higher, the wedge breakout names that worked were the ones tied to actual relative strength, not random oversold noise.
Macro was light, which matters. With no major data release forcing rates or Fed repricing, traders were free to lean into risk and chase the highest beta parts of the board, especially tech-heavy growth through QQQ, which outperformed everything at +3.08%. The earnings tape helped too: upbeat guidance from Zeta Global and steady corporate updates elsewhere kept the mood constructive, and in a low-macro session that was enough to let buyers press rather than hedge.
The bigger implication was sector leadership. Semis still lead on a 5-day basis even while the week-over-week rotation data says they remain structurally weak, which is exactly the kind of contradiction traders need to respect instead of romanticize. Retail is still rotating in, while housing, biotech, and energy are rotating out, so the market is rewarding selective growth and consumer exposure, not broad cyclical participation. For context, revisit yesterday's debrief.
Market Snapshot
Risk-on tape, but the scanner still showed more failed attempts than real follow-through
This was a bullish index day, but scanner internals were less clean than the headline tape suggests. Nineteen breakouts is workable, not exceptional, and 29 failures says plenty of names still could not convert momentum into real acceptance above trigger. Translation: buyers were aggressive, but still selective.
Yesterday's Pick
SNOW failed fast and that is exactly why stops exist
No spin here. SNOW did not hold the level and never earned the benefit of the doubt. In a market that rewarded strength elsewhere, this one proved the old rule again: a good tape does not save a weak setup once it loses structure.
Arxe Pick of the Day
JD got the nod because the stats were real, not cosmetic
JD offered the best balance of current setup quality and backtest reliability. The setup carried an A+ profile with 84.62% win rate, 5.39 profit factor, and pressure at 79, which is the kind of combination worth taking seriously in a strong market.
ELF had flashier headline stats, but the sample size was thinner and the setup was less stable. That matters. When the tape is forgiving, it is still smarter to lean into repeatability over small-sample hero numbers. For setup grades and live levels, see live setups in the scanner.
Neither bot traded JD today. With both systems paused, there was no execution layer active, so the pick remained discretionary intelligence rather than an automated conversion.

Highest RVOL Setup
Where the volume was today
EA BULL A- | RVOL 6.43x | Pressure 75 | Resolution: Failed
This was the loudest setup on the board by volume, and it still failed. That is the point. High RVOL is not a buy signal by itself. It just tells you where the market is paying attention. In this case, attention did not translate into acceptance, which usually means event-driven traffic overwhelmed structure rather than confirmed it.
Bot Performance
Paused, but still accountable
Wex and Xcel are in training mode while strategy is being refined. The scanner and Arxe intelligence remain fully active. When trading resumes, every trade will be published here. You can watch Wex and Xcel trade live in the Edge Lab.
Missed Trades
The tape handed out runners and nothing took a bite
Zero breakouts were traded. Twelve were missed. Total opportunity left on the table: +23.6R. Four of those were full TP3 runners, which is not a rounding error. That is a real cost of being sidelined, even if the pause is intentional.
CAT was the standout and the painful one. A B-grade name delivering +11.08R is the kind of outlier that reminds you lower-graded setups can still explode when the market catches the right theme. The metals complex also quietly paid, with GDX and GDXJ both clearing TP3.
Calibration insight: today was less about filters failing and more about inactivity costing participation, but the CAT move also argues against over-penalizing B and B+ names when the tape is broadening.
Breakout Scorecard
Good enough to trade, not clean enough to get complacent
Notable winners included CAT, CSCO, DDOG, DOCU, ELF, and ETSY. The list leaned growth and platform-heavy, which fits the QQQ leadership we saw all session.
The problem is straightforward: more setups failed than broke out, even on a strong index day. That means traders still had to be selective with entry quality and not chase first prints above resistance.
A sub-40% breakout rate on a big up day says the tape was supportive, but still demanded precision.
