SPY gains 0.23% as 17 of 98 setups broke out and 40 failed
Market recap, bot performance, and scanner analysis for Wednesday, August 12.
The UnxEdge breakout scanner tracked 98 wedge pattern setups today, and only 17 actually broke clean despite indexes grinding green. That is the whole session in one read: the tape looked cooperative on the surface, but wedge breakout follow-through was selective and you had to be in the right pockets.
This was a post-CPI market, and that mattered more than the closing percentages. With SPY, QQQ, and IWM all finishing positive after the morning inflation print, traders leaned back into growth, semis, and cyclicals, but not with broad conviction. Gold also flipped from laggard to leader week-over-week, a real rotation and not just noise, which explains why miners like GDXJ kept showing up with actual quality instead of random commodity beta.
The tradeable implication was simple. CPI did not kill risk appetite, but it also did not create a clean all-clear. That is why semis like INTC and the monster move in SMCI worked, while the broader scanner still logged 40 failures. Tomorrow's PPI now becomes the next rate-sensitive checkpoint, especially for duration and yield proxies where any bond move would hit TLT and IEF first.
Market Snapshot
Green tape, weak internals
The scanner leaned bullish all day, but the conversion rate was mediocre. Seventeen breakouts out of 98 setups is not broad momentum. It is a stock-pickers tape where the strong got stronger and the average names chopped traders up. For setup grades and real-time levels, see live setups in the scanner.
Yesterday's Pick
PYPL failed fast
No sugarcoating this one. Yesterday's PYPL bull setup did not hold the level and got stopped. Accountability matters more than storytelling, and this was a clean loss.
Arxe Pick of the Day
GDXJ had the best edge on paper, but the swing desk went with UBER
Verdict: trade_it
GDXJ was the strongest name on both backtest quality and current setup strength. It carried the highest win rate at 88.89%, the highest profit factor at 7.99, the largest sample at 18 trades, and the strongest pressure reading at 73. Add in the A- bull grade and the sector rotation into gold, and it had the cleanest statistical case on the board.
The broader Arxe swing pick for today was UBER BULL with medium conviction, but neither bot converted it. The reason was straightforward: the setup failed pre-trade conversion criteria and did not clear execution filters cleanly enough to justify a live entry. For setup grades and breakout levels, see live setups in the scanner.

Paused, correctly

Missed Trades
The market offered runners, but mostly in narrow lanes
Best miss of the day. This is a genuine blind spot because the move was too large to dismiss as noise. Semis remained a leadership group and this one exploded.
Clean downside continuation in volatility. This was a valid post-CPI risk-on expression and should stay on the filter review list.
Nothing spectacular, but it did what strong semis were supposed to do. This was a respectable miss, not a disaster.
Another semiconductor confirmation. The sector trend was there if you were willing to trust it.
Acceptable miss. Not ideal, but this is the kind of trade filters can skip without much regret.
Technically a miss, practically irrelevant. Small reward, limited damage.
Bottom line: 9 missed breakouts, +15.34R left on the table, but over half of that came from one outsized semiconductor runner in SMCI. That matters, because it means the miss profile was concentrated, not systemic.
Breakout Scorecard
The win rate says this tape was thinner than the indexes suggest
Notable breakouts came from BAC, C, GDXJ, INTC, LCID, and MCD. The mix tells you the tape was not one-dimensional. Financials participated, semis participated, gold participated, and one clean bear also worked. That is healthy rotation, but not broad trend strength.
Watch Tomorrow
Specific names, specific levels, no excuses
These are the unresolved A and A- names still coiling into tomorrow. PPI at 8:30 ET can invalidate all of them quickly, so entries matter more than opinions. For live grade changes and trigger updates, see live setups in the scanner.
