SPY rises 0.68% as 11 of 111 setups break out and 23 fail
Market recap, bot performance, and scanner analysis for Friday, July 31.
The UnxEdge breakout scanner saw plenty of wedge pattern candidates, but the tape only rewarded patience and punished forced entries.
The UnxEdge breakout scanner tracked 111 setups today, with just 11 breakouts against 23 failures, which tells you the wedge breakout quality was selective even as SPY closed green. That mismatch matters. Index strength looked fine on the surface, but underneath it was a narrow tape with IWM lagging and plenty of individual names failing to follow through.
There was no major macro event on the calendar, so price action leaned on positioning, analyst headline flow, and internal rotation. Retail flipped into leadership week over week while semis rotated out, which is not the kind of message you ignore when QQQ is still green but no longer doing the heavy lifting. In a tape like this, bearish setups need actual confirmation and bullish setups need clean trigger levels, not wishful thinking.
The analyst tape helped keep the market bid, especially around defensive retail and select large caps, with calls on names tied to spending resilience and steady earnings quality. That supports why the market could hold up without broad participation, but it also explains why scanner breadth did not translate into clean breakout conversion. For context on how that played out versus yesterday, here is yesterday's debrief.
Market Snapshot
Green index closes hid a weak conversion day.
Semis are rotating out week over week while retail is rotating in, which lines up with today's split between respectable index closes and uneven breakout follow-through.
Yesterday's Pick
COST did not hold the level.
That is the accountability piece. Yesterday's high-conviction read did not work, and there is no clean way to dress it up. The level failed before momentum could build, which is exactly why tight invalidation matters when the tape looks better at the index level than it actually is underneath.
Arxe Pick of the Day
VRT had the best paper setup, but this was still a wait.
Best-balanced setup on the board with an 86.67% backtest win rate, 6.5 profit factor, pressure score of 74, and a relatively fresh 4-bar structure. On setup quality alone, this was the cleanest bearish candidate in the scanner.
The problem was tape context. Broad market conditions leaned green, and even with trend labeling still bearish in places, short exposure into a firm SPY and QQQ close is asking for unnecessary friction without a confirmed break. That is why the call stayed at wait, not because the setup was bad, but because the environment was.
Today's swing conversion note: the live swing pick was SNOW BULL (HIGH), and neither system traded it. The likely issue was pre-filter rejection or trigger quality, not a discretionary miss. You can see live setups in the scanner for current grades, pressure, and breakout levels as they update.

VRT scanner chart – July 31, 2026 | UnxEdge
Highest RVOL Setup
Where the volume was today.
CVS BEAR A- printed the highest RVOL on the board at 2.02x with pressure at 79, and it still failed.
That matters because high relative volume is often treated like automatic confirmation. It is not. In this case, the volume was real, the pressure was real, and the trade still did not resolve cleanly. That usually points to noisy, headline-driven flow or a crowded directional bet meeting a market that refused to break lower. High RVOL got attention, not edge.
Bot Performance
Still paused, and that is the right call until the filters are tighter.
Wex and Xcel are in training mode while strategy is being refined. The scanner and Arxe intelligence remain fully active. When trading resumes, every trade will be published here. You can watch Wex and Xcel trade live in the Edge Lab when execution goes back online.
Missed Trades
Nothing painful got away, which says the inactivity was mostly harmless.
Five missed breakouts, zero meaningful damage. No TP1s, no TP2s, no TP3 runners, and total R missed was effectively nothing. That means the filters did not sidestep a high-quality trend day. They mostly sidestepped noise.
Calibration insight: today's blind spot was not missing size, it was proving that low-RVOL, low-extension breakouts are still not worth chasing just because the indices closed green.
Breakout Scorecard
The scanner found setups, but the market did not reward many of them.
Notable breakouts came from AMC BULL B, CAVA BEAR B, DECK BEAR A-, FSLY BULL A-, JD BULL A-, and LYFT BULL A-. The problem is that notable did not mean profitable in size. Most of the board lacked range expansion after trigger.
A 32% breakout rate in a green index session says the tape was mechanically positive but structurally weak for follow-through.
Watch Tomorrow
The names worth carrying forward all need precise triggers, not anticipation.
These are the unresolved A and A- names still coiling. Until they break, they are just ideas. For updated grade changes and live trigger zones, see live setups in the scanner.
