SPY slips 0.23% as 16 of 103 setups break out and 42 fail
Market recap, bot performance, and scanner analysis for Thursday, August 06.
The UnxEdge breakout scanner only found 16 winners out of 103 wedge pattern setups today, and that pretty much nailed the mood before the indexes even closed red. This was a thin conviction tape where the wedge breakout names that worked did so selectively, while broad participation stayed weak and failure rates stayed too high to trust anything indiscriminately.
Macro-wise, the market traded like a desk waiting on tomorrow morning’s July jobs report, not like one ready to press directional risk. SPY slipped 0.23%, QQQ lost 0.38%, and small caps lagged again as IWM fell 0.65%. The actual headline flow was more micro than macro, with post-earnings dispersion doing more work than any index-level catalyst. ABNB rallied on a clean beat, while scattered results elsewhere kept the tape fragmented instead of broadening out.
That tradeable implication was straightforward: don’t confuse isolated earnings strength with healthy market breadth. Semis still held up better than most on a relative basis, but retail and materials have clearly rolled over week-to-week while metals are rotating in. That is not the backdrop for lazy breakout buying. It is the backdrop for selective entries, tighter stops, and waiting for confirmation. For context, here is yesterday's debrief.
Market Snapshot
More setups than outcomes, and most of them failed
Scanner breadth leaned bullish on paper with 81 bull setups against 22 bears, but that bullish skew did not convert into clean tape behavior. The problem was quality after trigger. Too many breakouts lacked follow-through, and with only one A+ on the board, the premium inventory just was not there. If you are trading grades and levels, see live setups in the scanner.
Yesterday's Pick
JD failed fast, and that is why stops exist
No sugarcoating it. JD did not hold the level and never gave the clean extension needed to validate the long thesis. In this tape, failed follow-through was the dominant pattern, and yesterday’s pick got caught in exactly that regime.
Arxe Pick of the Day
BAC got the nod because the tape did not need more tech exposure
Verdict: Trade it
Why this one: BAC had the best backtest profile of the finalists with a 3.73 profit factor and a 78.57% win rate, matching the best hit rate while carrying slightly better pressure than ADBE. In a mixed market where QQQ was the weaker major index, non-tech exposure mattered.
Why it fits today: This was a day to avoid adding unnecessary correlation to software and mega-cap growth. Financial exposure was cleaner than forcing another tech long, especially with broad breakout reliability deteriorating.
Scanner context: Stable A- bullish setup, backed by better historical expectancy than the alternatives. For the live grade stack and breakout levels, see live setups in the scanner.

Bot Performance
Paused, which was probably the right decision for this tape
Wex and Xcel are in training mode while strategy is being refined. The scanner and Arxe intelligence remain fully active. When trading resumes, every trade will be published here. You can watch Wex and Xcel trade live in the Edge Lab.
Missed Trades
The bots missed 5.79R, but not all misses are equal
RVOL 1.0x, day move -4.86%. This was the cleanest miss on the board and the one worth reviewing hardest.
RVOL 1.0x, day move -1.48%. A usable downside break in a tape where bearish names often had better follow-through than bullish ones.
RVOL 1.0x, day move +4.37%. Semis still had enough relative strength to produce isolated upside despite weak index action.
RVOL 1.0x. Small edge only, especially with earnings risk looming tomorrow.
The honest read is this: the miss list looks worse in aggregate than it does in quality. UPS and ARM were real opportunities. The rest were either marginal, low-volume, or too small to matter.
Breakout Scorecard
The failure rate still says this market is guilty until proven innocent
Notable names that did break included ADBE bull A-, ARM bull B, COIN bear B+, DECK bear B+, LI bear B, and MA bull B+.
The key point is dispersion. There were both bullish and bearish wins, but not enough consistency on either side to call this a clean trend day. That leaves traders in a stock-picking environment, not a broad exposure environment.
Watch Tomorrow
Specific names, specific levels, no guesswork
These are the unresolved A- names still coiling into tomorrow. NFP hits at 8:30 ET, so opening levels matter more than usual. Use the trigger only if price confirms after the report. For live grading and any level updates, see live setups in the scanner.
